Archipelago
The archipelago of Cres - Losinj encompasses an area of 513 square kilometers with a coastal length that stretches 501 kilometers. It's composed of 36 islands, islets and reefs. The highest peaks of Cres are 650 m (Gorice) and 648 m (Sis), and of Losinj 588 m (Televrin) and 557 m (St. Nikola). A phenomenon of the archipelago is the island of Susak - a limestone reef covered with fine sand. It is a place where the lifestyle, dress, speech and agriculture haven't changed at all for the past 500 years.

Climate
Between the northern and southern parts there are major climate differences. The northern part of Cres is deeply drawn in the Kvarner bay. It is constantly windy and snow during the winter is not surprising, a characteristic of the mild continental climate. The southern part of the island group is more sheltered and the climate is distinctly Mediterranean. Average summer temperature is 24°C and during the winter 7°C, air humidity is 70%, and the annual insulation is over 2600 hours. The satisfactory relation between the temperature and the air humidity creates a climate that is very useful for treatment of the allergenic problems of respiratory organs.

Sea
Continuous sea movements in small bays with rocky sea bottoms are responsible for the outstanding sea clearness. The average sea temperature during winter is not lower than 12°C and during summer not over 27°C.

Flora
At the north end of the island of Cres there are oak, horn beam and holm oak woods and underbrushes. The middle part of the islands is transformed into pastures, olive groves and vineyards, and the unworked part is overgrown with maquis. At the southern part there are pine tree woods, laurels and maquis. In the last century, great surfaces have been afforested thanks to Professor Ambroz Haracic. During his long career, he also documented 939 different herbs among which most of them are used for various treatments.

Fauna
At the base of Osorscica is full of large and small venison: deer, mouflons, boars, rabbits and martens. There are 162 kinds of birds from 43 families - the most protected kind is the white vulture. Also, there are 95 types of fish, 61 crayfish, 38 shell fish and a dolphin community with 150 individuals inhabiting the surrounding sea. Sheep are the most widespread domestic animals, but there are also goats, cows, pigs, donkeys and horses.

Lake of Vrana
A natural phenomenon, its level is above sea level which surrounds the lake, and its bottom is 74 m below the sea bottom. It is 5.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and its surface area is 5.75 square kilometers. This freshwater lake is a natural reservoir of healthy water for drinking, as well as home to a lot of freshwater fish.

Osorscica
An historic story tells us that Gaudencij - benedictinian, who was pronounced bishop and later confronted the sinful life of the citizens of Osor with his words and acts. He was then expelled from town and lived on the mountain peaks as a hermit. According to the legend he cursed all poisonous snakes on the island and that is why, according to the belief, that there are no such snakes on Cres and Losinj. The climbing path leads to the Televrin peek (588m).

MALI LOSINJ, a town, port and tourist resort on the island of Losinj, situated on the south-eastern part of a large and well-protected bay. Chief occupations are farming, fishing, shipbuilding, seafaring and tourism. The climate is mild, with warm winters; the average air temperature in January is 7.3 °C and in July 24.7 °C; an average annual air temperature is 15 °C. The favourable climate, hotels and villas, afforestation, well-equipped and easily accessible beaches have given rise to intense development of tourism. The town itself lies in the most protected part of the bay.

The houses are arranged amphitheatrically. Along the coast, free space is left, designated for public life of the town. Much of the town lies on the eastern side, exposed to the sun. A road to Veli Losinj runs from the south-eastern part of the bay. As nautical tourism started to develop intensely, there is a marina in the port of Mali Losinj, equipped for all types of yachts and motor boats.

The long tradition in tourism dates back to the 1880s and is connected with the visitors who came to Mali Losinj for health purposes. In 1886 the Society for Beautification and Afforestation of Mali Losinj was established, thanks to whose efforts the Cikat Peninsula and the surrounding rocky ground were planted with Aleppo pines, which makes Cikat even today, along with the Sunny Coast, the major tourist zone.

Mali Losinj is today the tourist centre on the island. Its offer includes versatile, good quality accommodation facilities (hotels, boarding houses, apartments, campsites), sports and recreational facilities (yachting school, diving school, surfing, angling, tennis, miniature golf, bowling centre), specialities of domestic and international cuisine, as well as several cultural events, walks - sightseeing tours, ship excursions.

Major events: international tennis tournaments - Losinj Riviera (in June and July); Losinj Regatta (beginning of August); International Spear-Fishing Competition (in December); Assumption (15th of August); Fishermen's Nights (July to August); Brass Orchestra and the Majorettes - held every week (from 1st of July to 31st of August).

Veli Losinj, population: 994

VELI LOSINJ, a town on the eastern coast of the southern part of the island of Losinj, in the interior extension of a short valley, 4 km southeast of Mali Losinj. There are two small harbours, badly protected from the bora, one in the outer part of the valley (Veli Losinj port) and another in the neighbouring cove of Rovenska. Veli Losinj is connected by the island road (Veli Losinj - Cres - Porozine).

Due to its location in a hilly and luxuriant landscape (old, high stone houses and gardens with rare plant species) and mild climate, Veli Losinj has a years-long tradition in tourism. In 1866 Archduke Carl Stephen had a castle built, known as Morska Straza (Seewarte; Sea Observation Point), and in 1892 it was proclaimed a health resort. The castle owner had over 200 imported plant species planted in the castle park. This example was followed by numerous sea captains and others, which contributed to the beauty of Veli Losinj. Today, the castle houses a sanatorium for the treatment of respiratory diseases. It is famous for its well-maintained and luxuriant vegetation, picturesque ambience of a well-preserved Mediterranean small town, clear seawater and beautiful beaches.

Veli Losinj offers high quality accommodation (hotels, apartments), sports and recreational facilities (tennis, miniature golf, yachting, diving, sports fishing), exquisite cuisine and opportunities for very pleasant walks to Mali Losinj, as well as cruises. Numerous cultural and sports events and entertainment programs take place in Mali Losinj (4 km).
