BRIJONI
A group of islands and a national park (since 1983) in front of the western coast of Istria. Brijuni Islands comprise 3 islands, several islets and reefs. The coasts of the islands are well indented. Due to its favourable geographical location and low terrain, Brijuni Islands are known for their mild climate; winters are mild with an average temperature of 5.8 °C, summers being relatively warm with an average temperature of 22.8 °C. The average temperature in spring is - 12.5 °C, in autumn 14.8 °C. Relative humidity is fairly high. The vegetation of the islands is extremely rich - Mediterranean: holm oak, laurel, pine, olive, rosemary and underbrush. Brijuni Islands are of great maritime importance.

KORNATI


KORNATI ISLANDS
The largest and densest archipelago in the Adriatic Sea; consists of 147 islands, islets and reefs. They stretch in the length of about 35 km and the width of 13 km. Winters are mild; an average air temperature in January is 7.3 °C and in July 23.9 °C. Maximum air temperatures do not exceed 33 °C and minimum air temperature does not fall below -7 °C. The Kornati area is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Adriatic, especially rich in benthos species.
In 1980 the islands were set aside as a national park; the present area of Kornati National Park is 234 sq km.
The Kornati Islands have a number of small coves, "wild" harbours, where boaters may take shelter and dock.


KRKA
A river in Dalmatia; springs out at the western foot of Dinara Mountain and flows into the sea near Sibenik; length 72.5 km. In limestone it forms a narrow and deep canyon (up to 200 m), flowing over travertine barriers and creating waterfalls.

MLJET
An island in the southern Dalmatian archi-pel-ago, south of the Peljesac Peninsula, separated from it by the Mljet channel; area 100.4 sq km; population 1,237. A powerful sea current occurs in both channels, which changes its direction every six hours due to ebb and flow.
The climate is Mediterranean; an average air temperature in January is 8.7 °C and in July 24 °C. Mljet has ferry lines with Peljesac and Dubrovnik.

VELEBIT


RISNJAK
A mountain massif and a national park in the western part of Gorski Kotar, 18 km northeast of Rijeka. Declared a national park in 1953.The climatic conditions are typically mountainous, with the average annual air temperature of 6.5 °C; snow falls on about 115 days a year.

VELEBIT
The longest mountain range in Croatia in the total length of about 145 km. The highest peak of northern Velebit rise in the central part - Mali Rajinac (1,699 m). Below it the tunnel of Sveti Rok (St. Roch) is being built, through which also a highway is supposed to pass.


PAKLENICA
National Park is one of the most attractive natural phenomena in Croatia. The beginnings of mountaineering date back to the 1930s. Paklenica is a challenge to numerous mountaineers and has become a worldwide known mountaineering attraction. However, its magnificent beauty and charm is not enjoyed only by hikers and mountaineers but also by a number of excursionists, nature-lovers, flora and fauna enthusiasts. Apart from walking and hiking, one can also enjoy horseback riding and mountain biking.

PLITVICE
16 interlinked lakes between Mala Kapela Mountain and Pljesevica Mountain in the region of Lika. The lake system is divided into the upper and the lower lakes. The highest of them is Proscansko Lake (639 m) and the lowest Novakovica Brod (503 m).
Due to their natural beauty and significance, the Plitvice Lakes and a large forest complex around it were set aside as a national park in 1949. The national park comprises an area of 295 sq km.

BIOKOVO
A
mountain along the central part of the Dalmatian coast. In the north-west, the Dupci Pass (288 m) separates Biokovo from the Omis part of Dinara Mountain; in the south-east, a steep limestone mountain range continues all the way to Bacina, i.e. to the area around the Neretva mouth (36 km long, up to 9.5 km wide). Biokovo offers several moun---tain lodges: the mountain lodge under Vosac, another one under the Sveti Jure peak and the "Slobodan Ravlic" lodge at Lokva.

KOPACKI RIT
A
nature park not far from the confluence of the Drava and the Danube, situated at the very border, is one of the most important, largest and most attractive preserved intact wetlands in Europe. It comprises many backwaters and ponds along the Danube. Tourist visits by panoramic ships, boats, team of horses or on foot, are guided. Some packages offer the possibility of photographing or video-recording animals, birds in particular. Angling and hunting is allowed in certain parts of Kopacki Rit, which are put under less strict protection.

LONJSKO POLJE
A part of the flood plain between the Sava river and Moslavacka Gora Mountain, partly along the Lonja river; a retention basin for the Sava waters. Lonjsko Polje Nature Park comprises an area of 506.50 sq km. It is famous for a variety of flora and fauna. 

MEDVEDNICA
A mountain in the immediate vicinity of the northern part of Zagreb; the highest peak Sljeme (1,032 m). It stretches in the southwest-northeast direction in the total length of 42 km; area about 240 sq km. Tourism on Medvednica has a long tradition. The first hiking object in Croatia was erected here in 1870 - a small, wooden pyramid. Well preserved forests of Medvednica constitute the major recreational zone of the large city of Zagreb, with the population of almost a million.

TELASNICA
A
large cove in the extreme south of the island Dugi Otok; around 10 km long and between 160 and 1,800 m wide, with several expansions with sandy and mud bottoms; the depth in the inner part attains 12 m, and in the outer part reaches up to 60 m. Boaters and visitors to this cove, one of the best-protected on the Adriatic Sea, can enjoy a safe yachting experience as well as top-quality fish food and domestic wines. Kornati National Park is not far from Telascica (1.6 Nm).
